IMPORTANT CONCUSSION FACTS
Concussions are considered to be traumatic brain injuries. However, this by no means indicates that every concussion is serious, as the vast majority actually fall into the realm of mild injuries. It’s been estimated that anywhere from 80 to 90 percent fit this category.
However, since concussions can be mild, many people may get them without even knowing that they’ve suffered an injury. Researchers think that around 600 out of every 100,000 people will have a mild traumatic brain injury, or a mTBI, but they also assume that the rate could be as much as double that since not all injuries are noted or reported.
Recovery times vary massively from one person to the next. The low end is set at a week, with averages between seven and 14 days. However, it’s also been noted that it could take three months to fully recover. During this time, those who have been hurt could expect headaches, dizziness nausea and more.
However, even three months may be a conservative estimate for some people. These conditions can really linger and stick around for a while, and it is thought that one out of every five people — 20 percent — will have symptoms that go on for more than 90 days. Issues may include mood swings, trouble sleeping and more.
If you have suffered a brain injury in Burnaby, it’s crucial to remember that it may not heal as fast as other injuries. You could have to deal with these symptoms for a long time, and some evidence suggests that injuries could last a lifetime. Be sure you know what type of compensation you may deserve.
