How Does Express Entry Work?

Michael Golden Law Corporation Nov. 14, 2023

As immigration lawyers in Vancouver, we often handle questions about Canada's Express Entry program. It's a complex yet essential system that was designed to facilitate the arrival of in-demand workers and tradesmen from around the world.

Now, you might be wondering, what exactly is Express Entry? Well, it's an online system that the Canadian government uses to manage immigration applications from skilled workers. Established with the aim of making the immigration process more efficient for both applicants and the government, Express Entry has proven to be a vital tool for those seeking to immigrate to Canada

How Does the Program Work?

Through Express Entry, you, as an eligible candidate, will be ranked based on your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. This score takes into account factors such as your age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability. The highest-ranking candidates are then invited to apply for permanent residency in Canada.

Express Entry consists of three main immigration programs. If you meet the eligibility requirements for one of these programs, you can create an Express Entry profile and enter the pool of candidates.

Who's Eligible?

To be eligible for Express Entry, you must meet the requirements of one of the three main immigration programs:

  • the Canadian Experience Class,

  • the Federal Skilled Worker Program, or

  • the Federal Skilled Trades Program.

Specific eligibility criteria vary depending on the program, but generally, you must have relevant work experience, meet language proficiency requirements, and have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family members in Canada. You must also meet the minimum CRS score requirement for each draw. The CRS score is determined by factors such as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability.

Navigating the Express Entry system can be complex, but at Michael Golden Law Corporation, we're here to help. With our guidance, you can navigate the process with confidence and make your dream of living in Canada a reality. Whether you're looking to immigrate to Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, or Coquitlam, we'll be happy to help you reach your goals.

How Does Express Entry Work in British Columbia?

Express Entry British Columbia, or EEBC, is a program that's aligned with the federal Express Entry immigration selection system. It operates under the same principles, intending to efficiently manage immigration applications for skilled workers. The EEBC comprises several categories, including:

  • Skilled Workers (which includes the Health Care Professionals category),

  • International Post Graduates, and

  • International Graduates.

Each of these categories has specific eligibility criteria, and applicants must also meet minimum provincial eligibility criteria. Learn more about the EEBC program and eligibility criteria at CanadaVisa.com.

The Express Entry Process in British Columbia

So, how does the Express Entry process work in British Columbia? Here’s an overview:

  1. It all begins with checking your eligibility. You need to be eligible for one of the three federal economic immigration programs (the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, or the Federal Skilled Trades Program). On top of this, you also need to meet the specific requirements for the category you're applying under in the EEBC (Skilled Workers, International Post Graduates, and International Graduates).

  1. Next, your profile will be scored using the CRS. The higher your score, the better your chances of receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residency.

  1. Once you've checked your eligibility and prepared your documents, you can fill out your Express Entry profile. If your CRS score is among the highest, you'll receive an invitation to apply for permanent residency. From there, you have 60 days to submit your application.

Processing Time and Next Steps

The Canadian government aims to process complete applications within 6 months or less. However, the processing time can vary depending on different factors such as the volume of applications and the complexity of your case.

If your application is successful, you'll receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) document. This document allows you to travel to Canada and become a permanent resident. You must bring this document with you when you arrive in Canada, along with any other necessary documents.

Why Was Express Entry Established?

So what led to the establishment of Express Entry? It became evident that there was a need for a more efficient and streamlined immigration system in Canada. The previous system, which operated on a first-come, first-served basis, was often slow and resulted in long processing times for applicants.

By implementing Express Entry, the Canadian government aimed to attract and select skilled workers who would contribute to the country's economic growth. This system allows for a more targeted approach to immigration, focusing on candidates who have the skills and qualifications needed in the Canadian labor market.

Express Entry also allows for greater flexibility in responding to changing labor market needs. It's designed to be responsive to the demands of the Canadian economy, ensuring that the country can attract and retain the talent it needs to thrive.
