CYCLISTS HIT BY A DRIVER FROM BURNABY, 1 DEAD, 3 INJURED
Cyclists in British Columbia will always be vulnerable, and even more so at this time of the year when visibility may be a problem. Bicycle riders have hardly any protection against the weight of a negligent driver’s vehicle on impact. When six cyclists went for a ride on a recent Sunday morning, none of them could have anticipated that they would be hit by a driver from Burnaby — with devastating consequences.
Reportedly, the accident happened just after 10 a.m. in Richmond. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say that the six cyclists were eastbound on a local road near Westminster Highway when a westbound vehicle crashed into them. The 19-year-old Burnaby man who was the driver of the car remained at the accident scene.
According to Richmond Mounties, three cyclists received most of the impact of the crash. One of them — a 33-year-old man from Vancouver — died at the scene. Two other Vancouver men, ages 39 and 46, suffered serious injuries, and they were rushed to a hospital with their conditions reported to be critical and serious respectively. The injuries of the other three cyclists were minor.
The surviving family members of the cyclist who died when he was hit by a driver from Burnaby may be facing unanticipated expenses at this difficult time. However, they may pursue financial relief by filing a wrongful death claim against the driver. The two injured victims are also entitled to file personal injury claims. Some victims choose to seek the help of an experienced personal injury attorney to help them establish negligence and analyze the details of the accident before working toward navigating a claim for recovery of damages.
