BC PNP - Tech Pilot Project

Michael Golden Law Corporation Feb. 8, 2024

We at Michael Golden Law Corporation are here to help you navigate Canada's immigration programs.

One such program that has been gaining attention is the British Columbia Tech Pilot Program. Launched in 2017, the British Columbia Tech Pilot Program is a permanent initiative designed to meet the increasing demand for skilled workers in BC's thriving technology sector.

The main goal of this program is to attract and expand the pool of skilled workers across a range of tech occupations in British Columbia.

Let's dive deep into what it entails and how it can benefit aspiring tech professionals like you.

What is the British Columbia Tech Pilot Program?

The British Columbia Tech Pilot Program is an initiative under the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) tailored specifically for tech professionals.

It aims to attract and retain individuals with tech expertise by providing them with a pathway to permanent residence. This program stands out because it has a prioritized processing system for in-demand tech occupations.

Those eligible must have a job offer in one of the 29 designated tech occupations and the job offer must be at least one year in duration with at least 120 days remaining at the time of application. The beauty of this program is its responsiveness to the needs of the tech industry; it offers weekly invitations to apply, thereby expediting the immigration process for qualified candidates.

Who Can Apply?

The program is open to individuals who are eligible for either the Skills Immigration or Express Entry BC stream of the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP).

To elaborate, Skills Immigration is suited for skilled and semi-skilled workers in high-demand occupations in BC, and it requires a valid job offer along with meeting other provincial and federal criteria.

Express Entry BC aligns with the federal government's Express Entry system, which is a faster way for skilled workers to gain permanent residence.

Candidates must also satisfy the requirements of one of the federal economic immigration programs – the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, or the Canadian Experience Class – in addition to having a valid job offer in a tech occupation listed in the BC PNP Tech Pilot.

Again, it's paramount that applicants for the Tech Pilot have an offer of employment that will last for at least a year and has at least four months remaining at the time they apply to the BC PNP. This ensures that candidates are not only immediately beneficial to BC's tech sector but also have the potential for long-term contributions to the province's economy.

What's the Registration Process?

Registration is free and requires information about your supporting BC employer. However, it's important to note that meeting the program requirements at registration doesn't guarantee an invitation to apply.

Every week, candidates with the highest scores are invited to apply through tech draws. If you receive an invitation, you'll have 30 calendar days to submit a complete online application. There's a government application fee of $700.

Here's a more detailed overview of the process:

  1. To begin the registration process for the British Columbia Tech Pilot Program, potential candidates must first create an online profile with the BC PNP and register under the Skills Immigration Registration System (SIRS).

  1. This online system assesses candidates based on factors such as education, work experience, and a job offer in BC. It’s critical to note that registration in SIRS does not guarantee an invitation to apply for permanent residence; it’s a prerequisite to be considered.

  1. Upon successful registration, applicants are scored and entered into a pool with other candidates, where they can receive an invitation to apply during periodic draws. These draws are usually conducted on a weekly basis, ensuring the process is aligned with the needs of the province's dynamic tech industry. Candidates with the highest scores are invited to submit a complete application to the BC PNP.

  1. Once a Tech Pilot invitation is received, candidates have up to 30 days from the date of invitation to submit a complete BC PNP application through the online system. After applying, applicants can typically expect a decision within two to three months.

  1. If approved, they will receive a nomination that can be used to apply for permanent residence with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) under the Provincial Nominee Program.

  1. Applicants applying through the Express Entry BC stream will have the additional benefit of receiving 600 points added to their comprehensive ranking system score, effectively guaranteeing an invitation to apply for permanent residence in the subsequent federal Express Entry draw.

Essential paperwork including employment verification, job offer details, and personal identification must be meticulously prepared and submitted during the application phase.

It’s strongly recommended to ensure that all the information and documentation is accurate and up-to-date to avoid unnecessary delays or rejections.

How an Immigration Lawyer Can Help

An immigration lawyer can be a pivotal asset for candidates navigating the BC PNP Tech Pilot. They provide expert guidance through the complex web of immigration policies and keep applicants abreast of the latest program changes.

Lawyers can assist in assessing eligibility, ensuring all criteria are met including those for job offers, education, and work experience.

Additionally, they’ll craft a compelling application, troubleshoot any legal hurdles, and represent the candidate in communications with immigration authorities.

Should challenges arise, the lawyer's expertise in Canadian immigration law can be invaluable in resolving issues and steering the application toward success.

At the Michael Golden Law Corporation, we have the knowledge and experience to guide you through this process. We understand that immigrating to a new country can be daunting, and we're committed to providing you with the highest level of support and guidance.
